Since then, Pamela Baer has been a major force for philanthropic and charitable causes. Mayor Willie Brown appointed her to serve as the first chair of the San Francisco Mayor’s Fund, which is now known as The San Francisco Foundation. She is currently chairperson of the board at the San Francisco Foundation, held since 1999. She is also the founder and president emerita of the Pam Baer Foundation, which makes grants that support environmental conservation and protection.

Pam Baer studied at Brandeis University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in social work with summa cum laude honors and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She received a master’s degree in social work from the University of Pennsylvania, where she was awarded an honorary doctorate.

Her daughter, Lauren Baer, is a CNN political commentator who served as a senior foreign policy adviser to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign and has worked for U.S. Rep Ted Deutch (D-FL) and U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL).

She is the cofounder of Homeward Bound, a San Francisco nonprofit that provides dogs for veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder, and she supported the establishment of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area Foundation and served as its founding chairperson. She is also a longtime supporter of the San Francisco Parks Alliance, which has created and conserved more than 2,000 acres of parks in San Francisco, including the Presidio and four regional parks.

She served as part-time chancellor of the San Francisco Community College District from 1998 to 2014. To date, she is the only person to have held the position of chancellor while also serving as chairperson of The San Francisco Foundation. She was also a term member and vice-chairperson at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York City and a trustee for Save the Children, which she chaired from 2004 to 2006.

An avid equestrian, Baer serves on the board of directors at The Trust for Public Land, conserving land in San Francisco and across the country. She chaired Save the Bay, a nonprofit that helped preserve wetlands in the Bay Area through partnerships with community groups and government agencies.
